Be alert: targeted attacks on prominent Rustaceans

Important warning from Adam Harvey and the crates security team:

We believe that there is an ongoing campaign targeting rust-lang members and owners of popular crates that is attempting to compromise devices and accounts in order to use them to publish malware.

A video call is set up for something positive — maybe for a job, maybe for a project, maybe for a contract opportunity — and then that's used as a vector to either get the target to install something on their computer (such as a purportedly missing audio codec) or execute another command (for example, via putting a command on the clipboard).

Last month this trick was used in a successful supply chain attack against the array ref crate, among others.

Any piece of software that depends on open source (which is almost every piece of software) has a network of human beings who are potential attack vectors - everyone with publishing rights to any of the packages in the dependency network for that software.

I guess our best defense right now is dependency cooldowns - giving new package releases a few days before upgrading to them, in the hope that supply chain attacks like this will be spotted by someone else.

Release: datasette 1.0a40

Same security fix as 0.65.5, plus some neat new features and bug fixes:

  • Plugins can now launch and manage background tasks using the new datasette.add_background_task() method. Thanks, Alex Garcia.
  • I've migrated Datasette to httpx2 for features like the internal datasette.client.get() method.
  • A whole lot of bug fixes, many of them stemming from a recent effort to triage issues for a 1.0 stable release.

OpenAI agents attacked RubyGems back in May

OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems is a new bombshell report from Spencer Kitts, Thomas Larsen, and Sydney Von Arx - three of the four authors of the report on the agent attack on disused wikis (previously) last week.

This time they're noting that it looks very likely that an OpenAI agent swarm was behind an attack against the RubyGems package repository first reported on May 12th by Maciej Mensfeld of the RubyGems security team:

We're dealing with a major malicious attack on @rubygems right now. Signups are paused for the time being.

Hundreds of packages involved - mostly targeting us, but some carrying exploits. The team has been on this for hours. More details to follow once we're through it.

Those packages turned out to carry some very suspicious patterns:

  1. Many of them included "oai" in their name, or the author field, or the fake email address they provided.
  2. The files they were accessing were similar in character to the files retrieved by the wiki agents, using similar tricks (r.jina.ai) - and OpenAI have confirmed the wiki agents were theirs.
  3. The code in the packages appeared to be LLM-authored.

I find point 2 the most convincing, given what we learned from the wiki attack when it was analyzed in September.

Many of the packages were exploiting the RubyDoc.info documentation build process to exfiltrate (public) data from UK government websites, presumably as part of an information gathering task similar to the research tasks processed by the wiki-exploiting agents. We know this because one agent helpfully left a comment:

They also attempted to steal API keys via an exploit that was patched over two months later - it's not clear if those attempts were successful.

The thing that bothers me most about this incident is that the authors report that OpenAI had not disclosed to RubyGems that they were responsible for the attack prior to now. If that's true there are two options:

  1. After the Hugging Face and Wiki attacks OpenAI were still unable to review their previous logs and determine that they had previously attacked RubyGems.
  2. They knew about the attack on RubyGems and made the decision not to reach out to the RubyGems team about it.

Both of these are bad!

Given this incident, the Hugging Face situation, and the Wiki attack, the obvious question right now is how many more incidents like this are out there waiting to be discovered?

Update 14th September 2026

OpenAI have updated their page about The Hugging Face incident and other third-party impact from misaligned models to mention the RubyGems incident:

September 11, 2026: We are investigating new claims from a report that our AI agents carried out activity on RubyGems in May 2026.

Based on our review, our agents used the RubyGems platform to access the internet to carry out benign tasks and retrieve public information. Based on our review to date, we have not been able to verify the specific claims of our models uploading malicious packages detailed in the report. We’ll continue to investigate and share findings as part of our broader review of agent activity during training and evaluation.

I find it very unlikely that the various oai... packages published to RubyGems were not part of this same incident, but I look forward to reading their full findings once those are published.

Datasette 1.0a39 and 0.65.4 security releases

Today we're releasing two new security patch versions of Datasette: 1.0a39 and 0.65.4 - one for the current alpha series and one for the stable 0.65.x family.

These are security fixes which you should apply if you are running a Datasette instance on the public web - in particular if that instance mixes both public and private tables.

Following issues reported by Sevban Dönmez, Alex Garcia and I ran an extensive audit of Datasette using Claude Fable 5.1, GPT-5.6, and GPT-6 Astra. We then spent almost a week collaborating on and reviewing the fixes.

They helped find some very subtle bugs. We'll be incorporating security audits by frontier models into all of our development work going forward.

Alex came up with a way of splitting the work which I found extremely productive:

Alex Garcia and I worked together running and then responding to the audit, working in a shared private repository. For most of the issues we split the work: one of us would create the automated tests highlighting the issue, then the other would implement the fix. This ensured that two separate humans had eyes on each of the issues, in addition to our coding agents running different models.

Inside PostHog: How SSRF, a ClickHouse SQL Escaping 0day, and Default PostgreSQL Credentials Formed an RCE Chain

Mehmet Ince describes a very elegant chain of attacks against the PostHog analytics platform, combining several different vulnerabilities (now all reported and fixed) to achieve RCE - Remote Code Execution - against an internal PostgreSQL server.

The way in abuses a webhooks system with non-robust URL validation, setting up a SSRF (Server-Side Request Forgery) attack where the server makes a request against an internal network resource.

Here's the URL that gets injected:

This abuses ClickHouse's ability to run its own queries against PostgreSQL using the postgresql() table function, combined with an escaping bug in ClickHouse PostgreSQL function (since fixed). Then that query abuses PostgreSQL's ability to run shell commands via COPY ... FROM PROGRAM.

The bash -c bit is particularly nasty - it opens a reverse shell such that an attacker with a machine at that IP address listening on port 4444 will receive a connection from the PostgreSQL server that can then be used to execute arbitrary commands.

The Normalization of Deviance in AI

This thought-provoking essay from Johann Rehberger directly addresses something that I’ve been worrying about for quite a while: in the absence of any headline-grabbing examples of prompt injection vulnerabilities causing real economic harm, is anyone going to care?

Johann describes the concept of the “Normalization of Deviance” as directly applying to this question.

Coined by Diane Vaughan, the key idea here is that organizations that get away with “deviance” - ignoring safety protocols or otherwise relaxing their standards - will start baking that unsafe attitude into their culture. This can work fine… until it doesn’t. The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster has been partially blamed on this class of organizational failure.

As Johann puts it:

In the world of AI, we observe companies treating probabilistic, non-deterministic, and sometimes adversarial model outputs as if they were reliable, predictable, and safe.

Vendors are normalizing trusting LLM output, but current understanding violates the assumption of reliability.

The model will not consistently follow instructions, stay aligned, or maintain context integrity. This is especially true if there is an attacker in the loop (e.g indirect prompt injection).

However, we see more and more systems allowing untrusted output to take consequential actions. Most of the time it goes well, and over time vendors and organizations lower their guard or skip human oversight entirely, because “it worked last time.”

This dangerous bias is the fuel for normalization: organizations confuse the absence of a successful attack with the presence of robust security.

Internet Security Research Group co-founder and Executive Director Josh Aas:

On September 14, 2015, our first publicly-trusted certificate went live. [...] Today, Let’s Encrypt is the largest certificate authority in the world in terms of certificates issued, the ACME protocol we helped create and standardize is integrated throughout the server ecosystem, and we’ve become a household name among system administrators. We’re closing in on protecting one billion web sites.

Their growth rate and numbers are wild:

In March 2016, we issued our one millionth certificate. Just two years later, in September 2018, we were issuing a million certificates every day. In 2020 we reached a billion total certificates issued and as of late 2025 we’re frequently issuing ten million certificates per day.

According to their stats the amount of Firefox traffic protected by HTTPS doubled from 39% at the start of 2016 to ~80% today. I think it's difficult to over-estimate the impact Let's Encrypt has had on the security of the web.
